It’s a cool and refreshing Indian drink loved by everyone and consumed all around the year. It’s very simple and easy to make. Across India, itās known by different names -Ā matthaĀ in Hindi, taakĀ in Marathi,Ā majjigeĀ in Kannada,Ā moru/neer mor in Tamil, andĀ sambaramĀ in Malayalam. Traditionally, it was hand-blended using a wooden churner called Mathani. My mom would give me the duty of making buttermilk because I loved using this churner. In fact, we South Indians love to have curd riceĀ after every meal. Even when we get back home from travel, this is like comfort food and a must-have. If not curd rice then the next best option is to make Chaas or buttermilk drink. It’s our quick fix for any digestion-related problems plus it makes a great cooling drink. Chaas is always salty and made with some spices and herbs while lassi can be made sweet or salty. Lassi is considered to be more indulgent while chaas is helpful for better digestion. I must say that I love this way of enjoying buttermilk more than the regular kind. It’s so much more fun this way. Plus they look so pretty! The herbs and the chillies give the required punch and flavor to this Popsicle. Give this masala chaas popsicle recipe a try and you will not be disappointed. BTW, if making Popsicles is your jam, then check out these two recipes - Blueberry Masala Soda Popsicles, Peach Mango Creamsicles, and Strawberry Cheesecake Popsicles. Herbs - cilantro and mint leaves (not the stems) bring in so much freshness and flavor to this chaas recipe. They also have anti-inflammatory properties. Spices - ginger, green chillies, asafoetida, roasted cumin powder, black salt, and chaat masala are added to make these buttermilk popsicles more flavorful and help with digestion. Besides these ingredients, you will need a blender, and Popsicle molds.
These frozen summer treats can be had daily after any meal or as a quick snack. Buttermilk Ice Pops are loved by kids and adults equally.
You can also enjoy these buttermilk popsicles as a drink instead! A chilled glass of Masala Chaas post a heavy meal is always a good idea!
I would just say that it’s best to avoid these Popsicles if you are suffering from a cold or have a pollen allergy.
You can also grind all the ingredients without adding yogurt. Separately whisk yogurt and water using a hand blender and then mix in the ground paste.
These Ice Pops can be made ahead of time and stored in the freezer for 4-6 weeks. An alternative to Popsicle molds is small earthen pots.
