Avocado Hummus Recipe

This Avocado Hummus is based off of McCormick’s recipe from their 50 Dips for 50 States and it is oh so rich, dreamy and creamy.  Its GUACAMOLE + HUMMUS to create the best of both worlds in one dynamic dip or spread that I could eat all day long. And you will want to eat this Avocado Hummus all day long because its exploding with flavor AND you will want to eat it all day long because its guilt free and packed with protein! Healthy Avocado Hummus is made with only avocados, hummus and McCormick’s Guacamole Seasoning Mix.  You can use plain hummus and it will be delicious or make your own, but I use store-bought Jalapeno Cilantro Hummus and it really spiced it up to another level of flavor exploding deliciousness.  I highly recommend it! Avocado Hummus is great as an appetizer or snack with any type of crunchy veggies: celery, cucumbers, broccoli, radishes, carrots, peppers, jicama, are just a few of the possibilities!  If you want a less healthy option: pita chips, pita bread, crackers, pretzels, or tortilla chips pair nicely.  It can also be used as a spread for sandwiches,  in place of mustard or mayonnaise.

What is hummus?

Before we kick off Avocado Hummus – what exactly is hummus?!  Hummus is a creamy dip typically made from chick peas (garbanzo beans), lemon juice, olive oil, salt, sesame tahini, and garlic. It was once found mainly in Middle Eastern countries.  Now, it’s popularity has gained, giving it a permanent home in grocery store refrigerator sections as well as becoming a staple in many households.  It is also incredibly versatile as you can see with this Avocado Hummus recipe!

What are the Health Benefits of Avocado Hummus?

Hummus (and therefore this Avocado Hummus!) boasts several health benefits such as being high in protein, high in fiber, decreasing inflammation, stabilizing blood sugar levels, improving heart health, curbing one’s appetite, as well as providing many other key nutrients. It is a great choice for those with food allergies as it does not contain many of the common offenders such as nuts, dairy, or gluten.  It is extremely easy to make at home in a matter of minutes.

Are avocados healthy?

Our Avocado Hummus is even healthier than traditional hummus with the addition of avocados!  Avocados are a great source of monounsaturated fat which help to keep you feeling full longer and counteracts bad cholesterol (LDL’s).  They are also chock full of vitamins, minerals, and are a good source of fiber.   Some studies have shown they can reduce inflammation, diabetes, and help prevent some cancers.

Is avocado hummus okay to eat on a keto diet?

Luckily it is with a few tweaks!  Keep the avocado but substitute the chickpeas with a lower carb alternative.  Macadamia nuts or almonds that have been soaked in water for several hours before blending are a perfect to bring the carb count down while not compromising on taste.

Ingredients for Avocado Hummus?

To make Avocado Hummus, you will need:

2 medium ripe avocados peeled, pitted 1 package McCormick® Guacamole Seasoning Mix 1 cup Jalapeno Cilantro hummus (or from scratch) lime juice to taste

If you make hummus from scratch, you will need additional ingredients – I’ve included those below in the “How to make Avocado Hummus” section.

How can I tell if an avocado is ripe?

It is important that you use ripe avocados for maximum flavor and creamy consistency.   Look for avocados that have purplish/black skin.  They will feel soft to the touch when given a gentle squeeze but not mushy.  If the skin is green, or it is firm, it will need several days to be ready. Do not put unripe avocados in the refrigerator or you run the risk of them not ripening.   Instead, let them stay at room temperature.  Once they are ripe eat immediately or place into the refrigerator to slow down further ripening.

How to Make Avocado Hummus

Like all great recipes, they become even greater if the taste far exceeds the effort, and this California Guacamole Hummus Dip couldn’t be any easier. EASY Avocado Hummus:  Simply mash two avocados, stir in your McCormick’s Guacamole Seasoning Mix, then stir in your hummus, that’s it!  I don’t think there has ever been a more delectable dip in a shorter amount of time. MASH: SEASON: STIR: Homemade Avocado Hummus:  If you want to make your own hummus, that works great too!  You will add the following to your food processor and process until smooth:

2 tablespoons cup quality tahini 3-4 tablespoons cold water 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt McCormick’s Guacamole Seasoning Mix 2 garlic cloves, minced 3 tablespoons lime juice ½ -1 jalapeno, peeled, deveined, roughly chopped ¼ cup packed cilantro

Then add chickpeas and puree for 3-4 minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides occasionally.  Finally, add avocados and process until smooth.  Add additional water, one tablespoon at a time, if needed to reach desired consistency. Season with additional salt and lime juice to taste.

What is tahini?

If you want to make your own hummus and aren’t familiar with tahini, don’t be intimated!  Tahini is made by roasted, ground sesame seeds and the end result is a creamy, nutritious sesame paste kind of like a sesame peanut butter. Many grocery stores carry tahini paste and it is often found in the aisles where the peanut butter is kept. You can also make it yourself in a matter of minutes for a fraction of the cost!

Can you use something else in place of tahini?

Yes!  Almost any type of smooth nut butter will do.  Cashew butter, peanut butter, macadamia butter, and sun butter are all good options.  Substituting sesame oil is another great alternative.

Avocado Hummus Variations

There are countless ways to mix up your Avocado Humus!  You can stir in:

Pico de Gallo Homemade Salsa Salsa Verde Pesto Extra Garlic Cotija Cheese Olives Sun-dried Tomatoes Artichokes Roasted Red peppers Whatever your heart desires!

How to Serve Avocado Hummus

Avocado Hummus is wonderfully versatile.  Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

dip:  Serve with Avocado Hummus as a dip with tortilla chips, pita chips or if you want to be extra healthy, then with any sort of variety of veggies from celery to broccoli to carrots. spread:  slather Avocado Hummus on sandwiches, burgers, wraps or even breakfast toast! dressing:  transform Avocado Hummus into a creamy avocado dressing by thinning with additional olive oil and lime juice.  Serve the dressing on green salads, pasta salads, potato salads. etc. sauce:  Avocado Hummus can also be thinned with water to create a creamy avocado sauce for pasta, rice, zoodles, spaghetti squash, potatoes, etc.

But any way you serve it, this Avocado Hummus Dip will be a foodie flavor touchdown –  regardless of the outcome of the Big Game 🙂

Can you make avocado hummus in advance?

Avocado Hummus can be made several days ahead of time BUT it will continue to loose its vibrant color with time.  This doesn’t mean the hummus has gone bad, but it means the avocado has oxidized with the air and turned brown. You can help decrease the speed at which it turns brown by transferring the Avocado Hummus to an airtight container for storage then placing a piece of plastic wrap directly on top of the hummus before adding the lid.  This will delay oxidization.

Can you freeze avocado hummus?

Yes you can!   For best results, transfer Avocado Hummus to an airtight container, leaving about an inch of space at the top so it has room to expand but at the same time, without leaving a significant amount of space for air to get trapped.  It is better to use several smaller sized containers about 8-12 ounces than one really large one. Once you have found the perfect container, place a piece of plastic wrap directly on top of the avocado hummus and place into the freezer.  Freeze up to 3 months. To thaw, place Avocado Hummus inside your refrigerator; never leave out at room temperature to avoid risk of food-borne illness.  Thawing time will depend on the quantity and size of the container that it is in but on average will be around 24-36 hours.
